Before undergoing Lasik surgery, you should stop taking some medications, because they can cause corneal scarring or interfere with healing. Consult with your doctor about which medications can have this effect, and how soon you can start taking them again after the surgery.

Before having your laser surgery, you should remove your contact lenses for a while so your eye can regain its natural shape, if necessary. For soft contacts, you should be out of your lenses for 3-7 days before the surgery; you should stop wearing every other type for at least two weeks prior.

Lasik doesn't work for everything, but it can work for three basic causes of vision problems: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (an irregular cornea). Another common vision problem, presbyopia, is caused by weakening eye muscles, and can't be fixed by Lasik.
